Two kinds of value
A bullion coin such as the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf simply follows the gold price; its weight and fineness are fixed. A collectors’ coin, by contrast, can come out well above the gold value, depending on the year, the mintage and the condition.
We always assess both. If the collectors’ value is higher than the material value, we bid on that – even though it costs us more effort.
Do not clean them. With collectors’ coins cleaning can push the value down by tens of per cent. A natural patina belongs there; leave it be and let us look.
Coins we see often
- Krugerrand – 1 oz, 22 carat, the most traded gold coin in the world
- Dutch ducat – 983/1000, popular as a gift coin
- Gold tientje and vijfje – Willem III and Wilhelmina, struck until 1933
- Sovereign – British, 916/1000
- Maple Leaf and Eagle – Canadian and American investment gold
- Historic coins – French Napoleons, Swiss Vrenelis
Condition and grading
With collectors’ coins the condition counts heavily. Coins graded and sealed by NGC or PCGS generally fetch more because the quality has been established independently. If your coin sits in such a holder, leave it in there.
That grading happens on the Sheldon scale from 1 to 70; from MS60 upwards one speaks of mint state, that is to say uncirculated. With scarce years a single point of difference on that scale can already mean a noticeable difference in price.

Questions about selling gold coins
How much is a Krugerrand worth?
A Krugerrand of 1 troy ounce contains exactly 31.103 grams of fine gold, notwithstanding that the coin itself is slightly heavier because copper has been added. The purchase price therefore follows the daily rate directly and moves with it by the minute. Our gold price page shows the current value, so that you can work it out beforehand.
My coin is worn. Does that count towards the price?
With bullion coins hardly at all: there it is the fine gold that counts, and wear barely changes that. With collectors’ coins the condition does weigh heavily – circulation wear can take away most of the numismatic premium. We calculate both values and bid on the higher one.
What is a ducat worth?
A Dutch gold ducat weighs 3.494 grams at a fineness of 983 thousandths, which comes to a little over 3.4 grams of fine gold. That forms the floor under the offer and follows the daily rate. With unusual years, small mintages or a sound example without scratches we bid above that material value.
Do you buy whole collections?
Yes. Announce a collection in advance and we will set time aside for it and go through the coins with you one by one. You see for each coin whether we are bidding on the gold value or on the collectors’ value. That takes longer than one amount for the whole box, but it generally yields you more.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows after that.
