Sell Swiss gold 25 and 50 francs

In the 1950s Switzerland struck millions of gold 25 and 50 francs, but never put them into circulation. Most were melted down; the surviving coins are sought after.

What do we pay for a Swiss gold 25 and 50 francs?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Struck in 1955, 1956 and 1959 but never issued; the vast majority was later melted down.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Coins that never circulated

In 1955, 1956 and 1959 some 15 million 25 francs and 6 million 50 francs were struck in all. To preserve the gold reserve they remained the property of the Swiss National Bank. In 2009 Swissmint announced that all but 20,000 per type and year had been melted down.

How we value

We settle on the fine gold: 10.16 grams per 50 francs and 5.08 grams per 25 francs. Because so few remain, we also look at every coin as a collector’s piece. We always check weight, dimensions and fineness ourselves.

In four steps

How to sell your Swiss gold 25 and 50 francs

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Swiss gold 25 and 50 francs

How much gold is in a Swiss 50 francs?

10.161 grams of fine gold in a coin of 11.29 grams. The 25 francs contains 5.081 grams. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.

What is the difference from the Vreneli?

The Vreneli is the 20 and 10 francs that really circulated and has its own page. The 25 and 50 francs were struck later, with a different weight, and never issued.

Are these coins rare?

Yes, because almost the entire mintage was melted down. The collector value may therefore exceed the gold; we value both.

What should I bring?

The coins and valid identification. The valuation is free and you decide only after the offer.
