What do we pay for a gold 20 pesos (Aztec calendar)?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

20 pesos15 g16.67 g€1,721.34

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Most coins carry the date 1959: a restrike that Mexico went on striking long after that year.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A round figure of gold

The 20 pesos is one of the few historic coins with a round fine weight: 15 grams of gold, in a coin of 16.6667 grams at 900 fine. That makes the sum at the counter simple.

The reverse shows the Aztec sun stone, the great calendar stone kept in Mexico City. The obverse shows the Mexican eagle with the snake.

Original or 1959

After 1921 Mexico struck the coin again, always with the date 1959. Those restrikes are now the most common coins. For the gold it makes no difference; we do record the date on the purchase receipt.

In four steps

How to sell your gold 20 pesos (Aztec calendar)

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold 20 pesos (Aztec calendar)

How much gold is in a 20 pesos?

Exactly 15 grams of fine gold, in a coin of 16.6667 grams. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.

Is a 20 pesos dated 1959 worth less?

Not in gold: the restrike has the same weight and fineness as an original. An original date in good condition may fetch more from collectors.

What is the difference from the Centenario?

The Centenario is the 50 pesos with 37.5 grams of fine gold and a winged Victory. The 20 pesos is smaller and carries the Aztec calendar.

How do you check the coin?

With a calibrated scale, callipers for diameter and thickness, and a non-destructive measurement of the fineness. It all happens while you watch.
