What do we pay for a Gold Britannia?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €3,516.29 |
| 1/2 oz | 15.552 g | — | €1,758.15 |
| 1/4 oz | 7.776 g | — | €879.07 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

How to sell your Gold Britannia
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.
Paid out straight away
In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold Britannia
Are older Britannias less pure?
Britannias struck before 2013 were 916.7 fine rather than 999.9, so the total weight of an older one-ounce coin is higher. The gold content is one troy ounce either way, so what we pay comes out the same. We check the fineness during the valuation.
Which sizes does XGOUD buy?
We buy the one ounce, the half ounce and the quarter ounce. Each has its own fine weight and therefore its own line in the price table above, calculated against the gold rate showing at the moment you are at our counter.
Do the security features on newer Britannias matter?
They help. Since 2021 the Royal Mint has added surface animation and micro-text to the coin, which makes a counterfeit easier to spot. We still run our usual checks on weight, diameter, thickness and fineness, all of them non-destructive.
Is a Britannia worth more than a Sovereign?
Per coin, yes, and by a wide margin: a one-ounce Britannia holds 31.1035 grams of fine gold against 7.32238 grams in a Sovereign. Per gram of gold the two are worth the same, so it is simply a question of size.
