What do we pay for a gold 40 francs Belgium?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The young Belgium’s first large gold coin, with the portrait of Leopold I.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Gold from the very beginning

Shortly after independence Belgium struck its first large gold coin: 40 francs with the portrait of Leopold I. The size was that of the French forty-franc pieces, 12.9032 grams of 900 gold, exactly double the later twenty-franc pieces.

Settlement and valuation

We pay on 11.613 grams of fine gold against the gold rate of the moment. A coin nearly two centuries old may also have collector’s value. The valuer looks at year and condition and tells you at the table if that is the case; we promise nothing in advance.

In four steps

How to sell your gold 40 francs Belgium

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold 40 francs Belgium

How much gold is in a Belgian 40 francs?

About 11.61 grams of fine gold. The coin weighs 12.9032 grams at 900 fine, like the French forty-franc pieces.

Is this the same as a French 40 francs?

Weight and fineness are the same, the design is not. The Belgian coin shows Leopold I. We settle both on the same fine gold.

May I clean the coin before selling?

Better not. Polishing leaves scratches and can lower the collector’s value, while it adds nothing to the gold.

How long does the valuation take?

Usually fifteen minutes to half an hour, depending on how much you bring. With an appointment you are seen straight away.
