The same price for every producer – Umicore, Heraeus, Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, Perth Mint and the rest. What counts is weight and fineness, and those are the same at every recognised refinery.

Why bars yield the keenest price

With a piece of jewellery we have to melt, separate and assay before it is tradable again. With a bar we do not: it already is the end product. Our margin on bars is therefore considerably lower than on scrap gold – so you sit close to the spot price.

The condition is that the bar is identifiable: a legible brand, weight and fineness, and preferably the serial number.

Is the bar still in its blister pack? Leave it there. A sealed bar with an intact card and serial number yields more than a loose one, because we then have less to check.

Which brands do we buy?

  • Umicore – the Belgian standard, common in the Benelux
  • Heraeus and Degussa – German refineries
  • PAMP Suisse and Valcambi – Swiss, often with the Fortuna motif
  • Perth Mint and Royal Canadian Mint – mints
  • Unfamiliar brands – welcome too, we test the fineness ourselves

What we watch for

Counterfeit kilo bars do occur, usually with a tungsten core: that metal has almost the same density as gold. We therefore check not only the weight but also measure with ultrasound and X-ray. That happens in your presence and does not damage the bar.

With larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period, so that you are not dependent on the moment you happen to walk in.

In four steps

How to sell your gold bar

From walking in to payment usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Leave the bar as it is

If it is still sealed in its blister, leave it in there. An intact card with serial number saves checking work.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. Bring a valid form of identification.

  3. We verify the authenticity

Weight, dimensions and a measurement with ultrasound and X-ray. Non-destructive, and while you watch.

  4. Paid out immediately

At the rate of that moment. In cash or by bank; larger amounts are in your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold bars

Do I get more for a bar than for jewellery?

Per gram of fine gold, yes. A bar is already the end product and directly tradable, so we do not have to melt, separate and have it assayed again. Our margin on bars is therefore considerably lower and you sit closer to the spot price. With scrap gold those processing costs are built into the price.

Do I have to bring the purchase receipt?

No, a purchase receipt is not compulsory. It does help: together with the serial number it makes the provenance quicker to verify, and you notice that in how long the valuation takes. So keep the receipt and the blister pack together if you can.

Do you buy kilo bars as well?

Yes. Do announce a kilo bar in advance, so that we make sure enough liquidity is ready and, if you wish, a second valuer is present. At this size we check with ultrasound and X-ray as standard, because counterfeits with a tungsten core occur precisely with kilo bars. With larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period.

What if my bar is damaged?

A dent or a scratch takes nothing away from the gold value: the weight and the fineness stay the same. Only when the brand, the weight or the fineness has become illegible do we have to establish the fineness ourselves with extra measurements. That costs you no money, a little more time, and it happens in your presence.

What identification do I need in order to sell?

You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.

When do I receive my money after the sale?

You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows after that.
