How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 983‰ (23.5 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

How pure is a Dutch gold ducat?
The ducat is 983 fine, which puts it well above most historic coins and close to pure gold. A single ducat holds 3.4346 grams of fine gold in a coin of 3.494 grams, so almost the whole weight is gold we pay for.
What is the difference between a single and a double ducat?
The double ducat is exactly twice the coin: 6.8692 grams of fine gold against 3.4346 grams for the single. The design and the fineness are the same, and each has its own line in the price table on this page.
Can an old ducat be worth more than its gold?
It certainly can. Ducats have been struck since 1586, and early examples or scarce mint years attract collectors who pay well above the gold value. We assess the collector’s side as well and tell you plainly if that is the better route.
Are ducats still being struck?
Yes, the Royal Dutch Mint has continued the series to this day, which is why modern ducats turn up alongside centuries-old ones. Recent issues are valued on their gold content; older pieces we also weigh against what collectors are paying.
