What do we pay for a gold Deutsche Mark 2001?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 mark12 g—€1,434.45

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

One million coins, 200,000 from each of the five German mints – the farewell to the Deutsche Mark.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

An ordinary mark, but in gold

The design follows the familiar 1 DM coin: a 1 between two oak leaves on one side, the eagle on the other. The difference is the legend around the eagle: DEUTSCHE BUNDESBANK instead of Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

12 grams, not an ounce

Unlike most investment coins, the gold mark does not weigh a troy ounce but 12 grams. We settle on those 12 grams of gold at the rate of the day.

It was struck in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg, 200,000 each. A set of five mint marks is, for the gold, simply five times 12 grams.

In four steps

How to sell your gold Deutsche Mark 2001

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold Deutsche Mark 2001

How much gold is in the gold mark?

12 grams of 999.9 gold. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.

How do I recognise a genuine gold mark?

By the legend DEUTSCHE BUNDESBANK, the year 2001 and a diameter of 23.5 mm. We also check weight and fineness, because gilded imitations of the ordinary mark are in circulation.

Does a set of five mint marks fetch more?

Not for the gold, but a complete set in its original packaging may appeal to a collector. We assess that separately and discuss it with you.

Does the certificate have to be included?

No. A certificate or case is handy, but we value the coin without one as well. The gold is what counts.
