Sell Norwegian gold kroner

Norway struck its gold 20 and 10 kroner from 1874 to 1910, first under the Swedish-Norwegian union and then under Haakon VII. Small mintages, so scarcer than the Swedish ones.

What do we pay for a norwegian gold kroner?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

20 kroner8.065 g8.96 g€925.45
10 kroner4.032 g4.48 g€462.73

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The last Norwegian gold coins date from 1910; after that Norway struck no more gold kroner for circulation.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

From Oscar II to Haakon VII

Until 1905 Norway and Sweden shared a king, and the Norwegian gold coins of that period carry the portrait of Oscar II. After the separation, coins of Haakon VII followed in 1910. That was the end of the Norwegian gold coin.

Scarcer than the neighbours

Norway struck far less gold than Sweden and Denmark. We settle on the fine gold, but with these coins we always look at year and condition as well. If the collector value exceeds the gold value, we tell you.

In four steps

How to sell your norwegian gold kroner

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling norwegian gold kroner

How much gold is in a Norwegian 20 kroner?

8.0645 grams of fine gold in a coin of 8.9606 grams, just like the Swedish and Danish 20 kroner. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.

Are Norwegian gold kroner worth more than Swedish ones?

Not in gold, but they were struck in smaller numbers. That can make a Norwegian coin worth more to collectors. We judge that coin by coin.

How do I recognise a Norwegian coin?

By the word NORGES in the legend around the portrait of Oscar II or Haakon VII. We read it out for you at the counter.

Do I need anything besides the coin?
