What do we pay for a finnish gold markkaa?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 markkaa | 5.807 g | 6.45 g | €666.33 |
| 10 markkaa | 2.903 g | 3.23 g | €333.16 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Finland was then a grand duchy of the Russian Empire: the tsars’ eagle bears the Finnish lion on its breast.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A markka as heavy as a franc
In 1878 Finland tied the markka to gold on the standard of the franc. A 20 markkaa therefore weighs 6.4516 grams of 900 gold, like a Napoleon. The obverse shows the double-headed eagle of the tsars, with the Finnish lion on its breast shield.
Settled like a 20 francs
For the gold, a 20 markkaa equals a French or Swiss 20 francs: 5.8065 grams of fine gold. We weigh and measure every coin and check the fineness. The tsar’s name is not on it; the year is, and we record it.

Questions about selling finnish gold markkaa
How much gold is in a 20 markkaa?
5.8065 grams of fine gold in a coin of 6.4516 grams. That is as much as in a French 20 francs. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.
Why is there a Russian eagle on it?
Because from 1809 to 1917 Finland was a grand duchy within the Russian Empire. It did have its own currency, the markka, and you can see that in the legend.
Do you buy the 10 markkaa too?
Yes. The 10 markkaa contains 2.903 grams of fine gold, half that of the larger coin.
Do I need to make an appointment?
