What do we pay for a gold British Lunar (Shēngxiào)?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €3,718.03 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
Not to be confused with the Australian Lunar from the Perth Mint: the British one carries the portrait of the British monarch and comes from the Royal Mint.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A British view of the zodiac
The first coin, the Horse of 2014, was designed by the British Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho. Beneath the galloping horse is the Uffington White Horse, the prehistoric figure cut into the chalk hills of Oxfordshire.
Each year since, the next animal has followed. The year does not count for us: every coin is one troy ounce of 999.9 gold.
British or Australian?
We also buy the Australian Lunar, which has its own page. You can tell them apart on the reverse: the British coin carries the Royal Mint’s inscription and a face value in pounds. At 1 oz their gold weight is the same, and so is the price with us.

Questions about selling gold British Lunar (Shēngxiào)
How much gold does a British Lunar contain?
One troy ounce, 31.1035 grams, in 999.9 gold. We settle on that against the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.
Is the 2014 Horse worth more?
As the first year it is popular with some collectors, but for the gold value it makes no difference. We always value the gold first and then look at whether there is collector value as well.
How do I know my Lunar is British?
By the portrait of the British monarch and the face value of 100 pounds. The Australian Lunar comes from the Perth Mint and has a face value in Australian dollars.
Can I sell several years at once?
Yes, and it is quick: each coin is weighed and checked, and the price per coin is the same. With a large collection it helps if you ring us beforehand.
