What do we pay for a gold American Liberty (high relief)?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €3,718.03 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
The United States Mint’s first 100-dollar gold coin, struck in high relief.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Liberty, drawn anew
The 2015 coin shows Liberty holding a torch, in high relief and with a reeded edge. In 2017 a new version followed for the 225th anniversary of the United States Mint, with a lettered edge. Both are a troy ounce of 999.9 gold.
What we settle
We settle on 31.1035 grams of fine gold at the rate of the day. The high relief makes the coin thicker and narrower than an ordinary ounce; we therefore measure against the stated 30.61 mm rather than the size of an Eagle or Buffalo.
Many coins were sold in a box with certificate. A coin in its original packaging may be worth more to a collector; we assess that separately.
How to sell your gold American Liberty (high relief)
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling gold American Liberty (high relief)
How much gold does an American Liberty contain?
One troy ounce, 31.1035 grams of 999.9 gold. We settle on that against the gold rate of the moment.
What is the difference from an American Buffalo?
The design and the relief. Both are an ounce of 999.9 gold, but the Liberty is struck in high relief and has a face value of 100 dollars instead of 50.
Is the 2015 version worth more than the 2017 one?
Not in gold. The 2015 mintage was 49,325 coins; whether a year fetches more from collectors depends on condition and packaging.
Should the coin stay in its capsule?
Please leave it in. We can weigh and measure through the capsule, and only open it if necessary, with your permission.
