General
Do I need an appointment in order to sell?
An appointment is not compulsory: you are welcome to walk into any of our 45 locations in the Netherlands and Belgium. With an appointment a specialist is always ready for you and you are usually helped within thirty minutes. You can book an appointment online or by telephone.
What proof of identity do I need in order to sell?
You need valid proof of identity: a passport, an identity card or a driving licence. We are required by law to register your details whenever we buy precious metal, jewellery or watches. Without valid proof of identity we are therefore not allowed to buy anything from you.
When do I get my money after the sale?
You receive your money immediately after you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay out in cash; larger amounts are in your bank account within 24 hours. You first sign the purchase receipt, and the payment follows straight after that.
What does a valuation at XGOUD cost?
Nothing: every valuation at XGOUD is free and without obligation. You hear on the spot what your gold, jewellery or watch is worth and then decide for yourself whether you sell. If you decide against selling, you pay nothing at all.
Selling gold
How do you determine the price of my gold?
We weigh your gold, establish the carat with an acid test or an X-ray analysis and convert that against the current gold rate of the moment. You watch every step and can see how the amount is built up out of weight, fineness and rate.
What is old gold actually worth?
Old gold is settled on the pure gold content, not on the original shop value. A 14 carat piece of jewellery contains 58.5% gold; that percentage times the weight times the daily rate is the basis of your proceeds. The current price per gram is on our prices page.
Do you buy damaged jewellery as well?
Yes, we buy damaged jewellery too, at the same price per gram. For the gold value a break or a missing stone makes no difference; only weight and fineness count. With branded jewellery the condition can matter, because such pieces are sometimes worth more than the material.
Does XGOUD buy dental gold as well?
Yes, XGOUD buys dental gold too, with or without crown or tooth remnants. Dental gold is usually 14 to 22 carat; we remove any remnants and settle on the pure gold content. You therefore do not have to clean it beforehand.
Do I have to pay tax if I sell gold?
For private individuals the sale of your own jewellery and coins is as a rule untaxed in the Netherlands and Belgium. If it concerns a trading activity or a large estate, do consult your accountant. You always receive a purchase receipt from us for your own records.
Can I have my gold collected as well?
Yes, for larger lots we come to your home under insurance, throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. Our valuer weighs and values everything on the spot, and you only sign once you agree with the valuation. To arrange a visit, please contact the head office in Eindhoven.
Prices and margins
How often are the prices updated?
Every minute. We collect the spot rate and the euro rate from the world market and pass those straight through to every price on the site. The time of the last update is shown on each prices page, so you always know how fresh the figure is.
Why is the purchase price lower than the spot price?
Between your piece of jewellery and a tradable bar lie melting, refining and assaying, and those costs sit in our margin. We show that margin openly, per fineness, so that you can see what happens between the spot price and the purchase price. The spot price itself applies only to pure, certified metal on the world market.
What is the difference between carat and alloy?
Carat is the measure for gold: 24 carat is pure gold, 14 carat is 58.5% gold. Silver, platinum and palladium are expressed in thousandths – 925 for sterling silver, for example. Both say the same thing: which part of the weight is precious metal.
Do I get the same price at a location as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you are given at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site applies.
Rates
Where do these rates come from?
From the international precious metals market, through our rate supplier Swissquote. The quotations are in dollars per troy ounce; we convert them at the current euro rate into euros per gram and store every measurement, so that the movement can be traced back.
What is the spot price?
The spot price is the price for immediate delivery of pure precious metal on the world market, quoted in dollars per troy ounce (31.1 grams). That quotation forms the basis of every purchase price. We convert the spot price into euros per gram, so that you can compare it directly with our prices.
Why does the gold price in euros move differently from the price in dollars?
Gold is quoted in dollars worldwide. If the euro-dollar rate changes, the gold price in euros changes along with it – even when the dollar price stays the same. For your proceeds only the euro price per gram at the moment of sale counts.
Can I fix a rate?
Yes, for larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period. That way you know in advance where you stand, even if the market moves between the agreement and the delivery. Please contact the head office in Eindhoven to arrange this.
How does it work?
Do I have to make an appointment?
For precious metal and jewellery no; walking in is fine. For diamond and watches yes, because a gemmologist or watchmaker has to be present. With an appointment there is no waiting time in any case, and the right specialist is reserved for you.
What if I think the amount is too low?
Then you take your piece home again, at no cost and without any discussion about it. Do ask how we arrived at the figure – we show the entire calculation, so you can set it beside another offer somewhere else.
How long does a visit take?
For jewellery and precious metal usually half an hour. A watch or a consignment from an estate takes longer, because everything is assessed piece by piece. With an appointment you avoid the waiting time that can build up on Saturdays.
Can someone else do it for me?
Only with a written authorisation and a copy of your identification, alongside that of the person who comes. The obligation to register applies to the seller, not to whoever carries the item in. Without both documents we can value the piece but not buy it.
Do I get anything on paper?
Yes, a purchase receipt showing weight, fineness, rate and amount for each part. If you do not sell, you can also take the valuation away in writing on request. Say so beforehand and we will reserve the time to draw it up.
Trade-in
Do I have to pay extra when trading in?
Only if what you pick out is worth more than what you bring in. If it is the other way round, the difference is simply paid out to you – in cash up to € 500, above that by bank transfer within 24 hours.
Do I get more than by simply selling?
In practice yes, because with a trade-in we do not charge a margin twice. How much difference it makes depends on the piece you pick out; we set both calculations side by side so that you can compare them before deciding.
Can I trade in against a piece of jewellery?
Yes, against jewellery from our own stock: purchased pieces that have been checked and refinished. What is available differs per location, so ring ahead or plan an appointment if you are looking for something specific.
Does the registration obligation apply to trade-ins as well?
Yes. With a trade-in we are still buying precious metal, so your identification is needed and we record the transaction. That applies at every location and to every amount, whether you take a coin home or receive the difference in cash.
Office visit
Do I have to make an appointment?
It is not necessary, but it saves you waiting. For diamond and watches we do always plan an appointment, because a gemmologist or watchmaker has to be present. For precious metal and jewellery you can simply walk in during opening hours.
How much do you pay out in cash?
Up to and including € 500. Higher amounts go by bank transfer, usually in your account within 24 hours on working days. You sign the purchase receipt at the table either way, so the agreement is settled before you leave.
Can I come without identification?
For a valuation yes, for a sale no. The obligation to register when buying precious metal is laid down in law, so without a passport, identity card or driving licence we are not allowed to buy anything from you. Having it valued costs nothing regardless.
Is there parking?
Most locations sit in a shopping street with paid parking within walking distance. When you book an appointment we send the nearest option along in the confirmation, together with the address and the name of the specialist who will be expecting you.
Valuation at your home
Does a home visit cost anything?
No, not even a call-out fee. We do plan home visits from a certain size upwards, though; with one or two pieces we will point you to a location nearby, where you are usually back outside within half an hour.
Is my property insured during the visit?
Yes. As soon as you hand something over to us it falls under our transport insurance, and you receive a signed receipt for it. That receipt lists every item separately, so there is never any doubt about what left the house with us.
Do you come to Belgium as well?
Yes, throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. For Belgian addresses the valuer usually sets out from Antwerp or Eindhoven, so the travelling time stays manageable. The visit itself, the valuation and the payment work exactly as they do for a Dutch address.
Will I be paid in cash at the door?
No. At home visits we always pay by bank transfer – safer for you and for our valuer. The money reaches your account within 24 hours, and you keep the signed purchase receipt as proof of what was agreed.
Free valuation
Does a valuation really cost nothing?
No, it costs nothing at all, not even if you decide not to sell. We charge no call-out fee, no assessment fee and no administration fee. That applies at every one of our 45 locations, whether you come in with a single ring or a whole estate.
Do I get the valuation on paper?
On request, yes. For an insurer or for an estate inventory we draw up a written report; let us know beforehand and we will reserve time for it. Without that notice we simply talk you through the figures at the table and you take the purchase receipt home.
How long does a valuation stay valid?
The substantiation stays, the amount does not: that follows the rate of the day. Weight and fineness do not change, so the reasoning behind the figure holds indefinitely, while the sum itself moves with the world market. For larger consignments we can fix the rate for an agreed period.
Will you damage my jewellery?
No. For valuable pieces we use X-ray analysis, which measures the fineness without affecting the metal at all. An acid test we use only on simple pieces, and then on a spot that cannot be seen once the piece is worn.
