What do we pay for a Gold Sovereign?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:

Half Sovereign3.661 g3.99 g€413.90

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Gold Sovereign

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold Sovereign

How much gold is in a Sovereign?

A full sovereign weighs 7.98805 grams at 916.7 fine, which leaves 7.32238 grams of pure gold. The half sovereign holds exactly half that. We settle on the fine weight against the gold rate showing at the moment of valuation.

Do sovereigns from the colonial mints differ?

In gold content, no: sovereigns struck in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Ottawa, Bombay and Pretoria all follow the same standard. The mint mark can matter to collectors, though, and a scarce combination of year and mint can lift the value above the gold.

Is a Victoria sovereign worth more than a modern one?

For the gold value the two are the same. Certain Victorian issues, particularly the early shield-back types and scarce mint marks, do carry a collector’s premium. We check the year, the head and the mint mark and pay whichever value is higher.

Do you buy half sovereigns as well?

Yes, we buy both the full and the half sovereign. The half contains 3.66119 grams of fine gold, precisely half the full coin, and it has its own line in the price table above against the current gold rate.
