This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

The first design of 2014 came from John Mercanti, the former chief engraver of the United States Mint.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

An American hand for an Australian bird

For the first year the Perth Mint brought in John Mercanti, for many years chief engraver of the United States Mint. His eagle sits on a branch. Later years show the bird in other poses.

Proof, high relief or standard

The series exists as a standard investment coin and in proof and high-relief versions. For the gold it makes no difference: every 1 oz contains 31.1035 grams of fine gold. Proof coins with their original box and certificate we assess separately, because they sometimes fetch more.

So do bring the packaging if you still have it. Without the box the coin is just as welcome, and we settle on the gold.

In four steps

How to sell your gold Wedge-tailed Eagle

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold Wedge-tailed Eagle

What does a 1 oz Wedge-tailed Eagle fetch?

It contains 31.1035 grams of fine gold. The price follows the gold rate of the moment, less our margin, and stands per size in the table on this page.

Is a high-relief version worth more?

The gold weight is the same. A high-relief or proof version in its original packaging may fetch more from collectors; we assess that separately and tell you honestly if it does not.

Do you buy the 1/10 oz too?

Yes. The tenth ounce contains 3.110 grams of fine gold and is checked and settled in the same way.

Do I need an appointment?

Not for a few coins; you can walk in at any of our 45 locations. For a larger lot it helps to ring ahead, so that enough money is ready.
