Sell gold 8 and 4 florin

From 1870 to 1892 Emperor Franz Joseph had gold florins struck that also counted as francs. The restrikes dated 1892 in particular still turn up often.

What do we pay for a gold 8 and 4 florin?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The coin carries a double value: 8 florin or 20 francs, and 4 florin or 10 francs.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

One coin in two currencies

Austria did not belong to the Latin Monetary Union, but it did want to trade with the countries around it. The gold coin was therefore given a double value: 8 florin or 20 francs. Weight and fineness are those of a French 20 francs.

The Austrian Mint in Vienna later struck these coins again with the date 1892. Those restrikes are the coins we see most often.

How we settle

On the fine gold: 5.8065 grams in the 8 florin, half that in the 4 florin. Original years from before 1892 may fetch more than a restrike; we look at that coin by coin.

In four steps

How to sell your gold 8 and 4 florin

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold 8 and 4 florin

How much gold is in an 8 florin?

5.8065 grams of fine gold in a coin of 6.4516 grams, as much as in a French 20 francs. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.

Why does an Austrian coin say 20 francs?

To make the coin usable outside Austria too. It was therefore given two values, 8 florin and 20 francs, at the weight of the French coin.

Is my coin dated 1892 a restrike?

Probably, as that date is the most restruck. For the gold it makes no difference, and we tell you if your coin is an original with collector value.

What is the difference from the Hungarian 8 forint?

The country and the legend; weight and fineness are the same. The Hungarian forint has its own page.
