What do we pay for a yugoslav gold ducat?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ducats | 13.765 g | 13.96 g | €1,579.57 |
| 1 ducat | 3.441 g | 3.49 g | €394.89 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 986‰ (23.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
King Alexander I on the obverse; the double eagle with the arms of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia on the reverse.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Broad and thin
The 4 ducats is a striking coin: 40 mm across but only 13.96 grams in weight. It follows the same ducat weight as the Austrian 4 ducats, at a fineness of 986. The single ducat is 20 mm and weighs 3.49 grams.
Coins exist with and without a small countermark. For the gold that makes no difference.
How we settle
On the fine gold: 13.76 grams per 4 ducats, 3.44 grams per ducat. A thin, broad coin bends easily; a slight distortion is no problem for the gold value. We weigh, measure and determine the fineness without damaging the coin.

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling yugoslav gold ducat
How much gold is in a Yugoslav 4 ducats?
13.765 grams of fine gold in a coin of 13.96 grams. We settle against the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.
What is the difference from the Austrian 4 ducats?
The country and the design. Weight and fineness are very close, so the gold is practically the same. We record which coin it is.
My coin is slightly bent. Does that matter?
Not for the gold value. The 4 ducats is thin and bends easily. We settle on the gold inside.
What is the countermark on some coins?
A small extra stamp applied to some of the coins. It changes nothing about weight or fineness; we do note it on the purchase receipt.
