How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The tientje lives on
The gold tientje did not end with the arrival of the euro. Since 2002 the Royal Dutch Mint has struck gold 10-euro coins with exactly the size of the old ten guilders: 6.72 grams of 900 gold, so 6.048 grams of fine gold. Each year brings another subject, from the royal wedding to Vincent van Gogh and Michiel de Ruyter.

The coin says 10 euros, but the gold is worth many times more. We pay on the 6.048 grams of fine gold against the gold rate of the moment. Subject and mintage are assessed by the valuer at the table; we do not promise a premium for any particular year in advance.
The coins were struck in proof and are often kept in their case. Feel free to leave them there.
