What do we pay for a gold rider (14 guilders)?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 920‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

An armoured horseman with raised sword. Struck by several provinces of the Republic, such as Holland, Utrecht and West Friesland.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A horseman of the Republic

In 1749 the Republic was given a new gold coin: the gold rider of 14 guilders, with an armoured horseman on a rearing horse. Alongside it came the half rider of 7 guilders. They were struck by the mints of several provinces, including Holland, Utrecht and West Friesland, and each province put its own arms on the coin.

Gold value and collector’s value

The full rider weighs 10 grams of 920 gold, so about 9.2 grams of fine gold; the half rider holds just over 4.5 grams. We always pay at least on that gold. Old pieces sometimes differ by a few hundredths of a gram through wear; the valuer weighs every coin.

Riders are two and a half centuries old and are collected. Province, year and condition determine whether a coin fetches more than its gold. The valuer assesses that at the table; we promise no premium in advance.

In four steps

How to sell your gold rider (14 guilders)

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold rider (14 guilders)

How much gold is in a gold rider?

A full rider of 14 guilders weighs 10 grams at 920 fine and contains about 9.2 grams of fine gold. The half rider of 7 guilders weighs almost 5 grams and contains just over 4.5 grams of fine gold.

My coin weighs a little under 10 grams. Is it fake?

Not necessarily. Coins from around 1750 are often slightly worn through use; a weight of 9.94 grams occurs in genuine pieces. The valuer also checks dimensions and fineness, so you know for certain what you have.

Is a silver rider the same thing?

No. The silver rider or ducaton is a large silver coin with a similar horseman. We settle that one on silver; the gold rider on gold.

Should I have the coin cleaned?

No, better not. Polishing damages the surface and can lower the collector’s value of an old coin. Bring it as it is.
