How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Gold American Eagle

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold American Eagle

Why does an American Eagle weigh more than one ounce?

Because the coin is 916.7 fine rather than pure. The alloy of copper and silver brings the total weight of the one-ounce version to 33.93 grams, while the gold content remains exactly one troy ounce. We settle on that gold content alone.

What is the difference with the American Buffalo?

The Buffalo is 999.9 pure gold, the Eagle is 916.7 alloyed with copper and silver. Both hold one troy ounce of gold and therefore fetch the same with us. The Eagle is simply harder and stands up to handling rather better.

Do you buy the fractional Eagles as well?

Yes, all four sizes cross our table: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. Each has its own fine weight and therefore its own price, which you can read straight from the table on this page against the current rate.

Is a proof American Eagle worth more?

It can be, if the original capsule, box and certificate are still with it. A proof issue in a complete set carries a collector’s value that may sit above the gold value, and we assess both and offer you the higher of the two.
