What do we pay for a hungarian gold 8 and 4 forint?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 forints | 5.807 g | 6.45 g | €666.33 |
| 4 forints | 2.903 g | 3.23 g | €333.16 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
The Hungarian counterpart of the Austrian florin, with Franz Joseph as King of Hungary and the legend in Hungarian.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Hungarian legend, French weight
After the Compromise of 1867, Hungary was given its own coinage within Austria-Hungary. The gold 8 forint shows Franz Joseph as King of Hungary and the double value 8 Forint 20 Frank. The mint mark KB stands for Kremnica, then called Körmöcbánya.
Settled on the gold
An 8 forint contains 5.8065 grams of fine gold, just like a Napoleon. We weigh, measure and check the fineness.

Questions about selling hungarian gold 8 and 4 forint
How much gold is in a Hungarian 8 forint?
5.8065 grams of fine gold in a coin of 6.4516 grams. That is the same as a French 20 francs, and that is what we settle on.
What does KB on my coin mean?
It is the mint mark of Kremnica, the old Hungarian mint in what is now Slovakia. It says where the coin was struck, not how much gold it contains.
Is the forint the same as the korona?
No. The forint is the older coin, up to 1892; then came the korona, with a different weight. The korona has its own page.
Do you buy the 4 forint as well?
Yes. The 4 forint contains 2.903 grams of fine gold and is checked in the same way.
