What do we pay for platinum?

We settle platinum per alloy, from 850 to 999. The table on this page shows what one gram of each fineness yields at the rate of this moment; the higher the fineness, the larger the share of pure platinum and the higher the amount per gram.

The rate underneath is the same for every fineness. What differs is only how much of your gram is actually platinum: 999 leaves virtually everything, 950 nineteen twentieths, 850 a little less again.

How do you read the alloy of your platinum?

Platinum knows no carat. The fineness is expressed in thousandths: a stamp 950 means 950 parts pure platinum per 1000 parts of alloy. The rest is usually iridium or ruthenium, which makes the metal harder.

If there is no stamp in it, we establish the fineness with an analysis. That happens in your presence, at the table, before any amount is worked out.

What you see here is the pure material value. Rate times fineness times weight, with nothing deducted. We calculate with the world market rate of this moment, converted at the euro rate of that same moment, and refresh every minute.

What moves the platinum rate

Platinum is in the first place an industrial metal. The largest part of it goes into catalytic converters, and beyond that into the glass and chemical industries and into hydrogen technology. Jewellery is only a modest part of demand.

Supply is moreover heavily concentrated: the overwhelming majority comes from a handful of mines, with South Africa in the lead. Strikes, power cuts or breakdowns there therefore work through into the rate directly, faster than they do with gold.

Because the market is smaller than that of gold, the same quantities of buy and sell orders have a greater effect here. That explains the sharper movements on days without any clear news.

Questions about the platinum price

How often is the platinum price on this page updated?

Every minute. We fetch the spot rate for platinum and the euro exchange rate from the world market and pass them straight through to every alloy in the table. The time of the last update is shown beside the chart, so you can always see how fresh the figure is.

Why is your purchase price lower than the spot price?

Between your piece and a tradeable bar sit melting, refining and assaying, and those costs sit in our margin. We show that margin openly, per fineness, so that you can see what happens between the spot price and the purchase price. The spot price itself applies only to pure, certified metal.

How do I tell platinum from white gold?

By weight first of all: platinum has a density of 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre, so at the same size it feels distinctly heavier than white gold. White gold also carries a thin rhodium layer that wears away over the years, while platinum stays as it is. The measurement settles it.

Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?

Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
