What do we pay for a gold Kruger pond (ZAR)?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 pond | 7.322 g | 7.99 g | €840.29 |
| 1/2 pond | 3.661 g | 3.99 g | €420.14 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Struck in Pretoria for the South African Republic, the Transvaal, with the portrait of President Paul Kruger.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Gold from the Witwatersrand
After the gold discoveries on the Witwatersrand, the Transvaal had the gold to strike its own coins. From 1892 to 1900 the pond and half pond appeared, to the size of the British Sovereign. Paul Kruger is on the obverse, the arms of the republic with an ox wagon on the reverse.
Two types exist from 1892: with a single and with a double shaft on that wagon. The single-shaft type is rare.
How we value
We settle on 7.32 grams of fine gold per pond. As this is a historic coin whose dates differ in rarity, we also look at the date and condition. Mounted or damaged coins we value on their gold.

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

Questions about selling gold Kruger pond (ZAR)
How much gold is in a Kruger pond?
7.322 grams of fine gold in a coin of 7.988 grams, just like a Sovereign. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.
Is this the same as a Krugerrand?
No. The Krugerrand is an investment coin of 1967 with a troy ounce of gold. The Kruger pond is a historic coin of the South African Republic, with much less gold.
How do I know which type my 1892 coin is?
Look at the wagon in the arms on the reverse: it has either a single or a double shaft. We will look at it together with you under the loupe.
My coin is set in a pendant. Do you buy that?
Yes. A mounted coin we value as gold, including the gold of the mount if that is gold too.
