How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

How much gold is in a Centenario?
The fifty-peso piece weighs 41.6667 grams at 900 fine, which leaves exactly 37.5 grams of pure gold. That is more than a troy ounce and makes it the heaviest of the historic coins that regularly come across our counter.
Why was this coin struck?
To mark the centenary of Mexican independence in 1921, which is where the name Centenario comes from. The Winged Victory stands before the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, a design Mexico kept for the restrikes it issued for decades afterwards.
Are the restrikes worth less than a 1921 coin?
For the gold value they are identical, since all hold 37.5 grams of fine gold. Most Centenarios carry the date 1947 because of the long restrike run, so a genuine 1921 issue is scarce and can command a collector’s premium.
Is this the largest gold coin you buy?
