This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The 10 dollars for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games was the first American gold coin in more than fifty years.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

The old sizes, new subjects

The 10 dollars of 1984, with two torch bearers, was the first gold coin of the United States since 1933 and the first coin to carry the W mint mark of West Point. Its weight and fineness were those of the old eagle: 16.718 grams of 900 gold.

In 1986 the 5 dollars for the Statue of Liberty followed, to the size of the old half eagle. New subjects have appeared in these two sizes almost every year since.

Proof in a case

Many of these coins were sold as proofs, in a box with certificate. For the gold that makes no difference; for a collector it sometimes does. We value the fine gold first and then look at whether the finish or the subject is worth more.

In four steps

How to sell your US gold commemorative coins

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling US gold commemorative coins

How much gold is in a gold commemorative 5 dollars?

The coin weighs 8.359 grams at a fineness of 900, so 7.523 grams of fine gold. We settle on that against the rate of the moment.

Are these the same coins as the old Liberty and Indian?

No, they are modern commemorative coins of the same size. The historic 5, 10 and 20 dollars can be found on the Double Eagle page.

Does the subject matter for the price?

Not for the gold value. Some subjects with a small mintage are sought after by collectors; we assess that separately and tell you if so.

Should I bring the box?

Please do, if you still have it. It is not required, but with proof issues it belongs with the coin and can determine its value to a collector.
