What do we pay for a chilean gold pesos?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 pesos | 18.306 g | 20.34 g | €2,100.69 |
| 50 pesos | 9.153 g | 10.17 g | €1,050.34 |
| 20 pesos | 3.661 g | 4.07 g | €420.13 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Chile kept striking these coins until 1980, long after gold had disappeared from everyday payments.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

An unusual weight
Unlike most coins, the Chilean peso follows neither a French nor a British standard. The 100 pesos weighs 20.3397 grams at 900, which works out at 18.3 grams of fine gold – a little more than half a troy ounce.
How we value
We settle on the fine gold per size. The coins were struck until 1980 and often come in in good condition. We weigh and measure every coin and check the fineness, partly because a weight of 20.34 grams can be unexpected for anyone who does not know the coin.
If you have a mixed bag of 20, 50 and 100 pesos, we sort them for you.

Questions about selling chilean gold pesos
How much gold is in a Chilean 100 pesos?
18.306 grams of fine gold in a coin of 20.34 grams. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.
Why does the weight differ from other coins?
Chile followed a standard of its own rather than that of the French franc or the British pound. That gives the coin an unusual fine weight, but we simply settle on the gold inside.
Do you buy the 20 and 50 pesos too?
Yes. The 50 pesos contains 9.153 grams of fine gold and the 20 pesos 3.661 grams; each size has its own line in the table.
Does the date matter?
For most dates, no, because the coin was struck for a long time and in large numbers. We do look at the date and tell you if a coin is worth more.
