Sell a Gold Lunar

Australia, from 1996. A new animal from the Chinese zodiac every year, in a series that runs in cycles of twelve – which is exactly why some years are scarce.

What do we pay for a Gold Lunar?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 oz31.104 g€3,516.29
1/2 oz15.552 g€1,758.15

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Gold Lunar

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold Lunar

Are some Lunar years worth more than others?

Yes, more so than with most investment coins. Mintages differ sharply per animal and per series, and popular years such as the dragon are sought after by collectors. We check the year and the series and pay the collector’s value where it exceeds the gold value.

What is the difference between Lunar Series I, II and III?

They are three successive twelve-year cycles from the Perth Mint, each with its own designs and mintage limits. Series I ran from 1996, and its earlier years are generally the scarcest. We identify the series during the valuation and take it into account.

Does it matter that my coin is not in its original packaging?

For the gold value it makes no difference at all: weight and fineness are unchanged. For a collector’s premium it does count, because a coin in its original capsule and box presents better. Bring whatever packaging you still have along.

Which sizes does XGOUD buy?

We buy the one ounce, the half ounce and the tenth ounce from this series. Each size has its own fine weight and therefore its own price, shown per line in the table on this page against the current gold rate.
