What do we pay for a gold ECU Belgium?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 ECU 1987-1988 | 15.552 g | 17.28 g | €1,821.83 |
| 50 ECU from 1989 | 15.552 g | 15.55 g | €1,821.83 |
| 100 ECU | 31.104 g | — | €3,643.67 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
The 50 ECU of 1987 and 1988 is 900 gold; from 1989 it was struck in pure gold. The gold weight stayed at half a troy ounce.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A coin for a currency that never came
In 1987 Belgium marked thirty years of the Treaty of Rome with a gold coin of 50 ECU, the unit of account of the European Community. The obverse shows Emperor Charles V after an old coin, the reverse the value between twelve stars. New issues followed, including 100 ECU. The ECU never became real money, but the gold is real.
Two alloys, the same gold
The first 50 ECU, of 1987 and 1988, is struck in 900 gold and weighs 17.28 grams. From 1989 the same coin was struck in pure gold and weighed 15.55 grams. The gold weight is the same in both cases: half a troy ounce, and that is what we pay on.
The 100 ECU contains a full troy ounce of gold. We weigh every coin and read the year, so the right variant is settled.

Questions about selling gold ECU Belgium
How much gold is in a 50 ECU?
