Why is the Maple Leaf purer than a Krugerrand?
Because Canada chose a different route: the Maple Leaf is struck at 999.9 fine, with no copper added, whereas the Krugerrand is alloyed to 916.7 to make it harder. Both contain one troy ounce of gold, so the payout is the same.
My Maple Leaf has small scratches, does that cost me money?
For the gold value, no. Pure gold is soft, so milk spots and fine scratches are common on this coin and they take nothing away from the fine weight. Only with a sealed proof issue does the condition weigh in, and then we say so.
Should I take the coin out of its plastic holder?
No, please leave it in. We can weigh and measure through the holder, and an original sealed tube or assay card is worth keeping intact. If we do need to open it for a check, we ask you first and do it while you watch.
