What do we pay for a Mexican gold pesos (2 to 10 pesos)?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 pesos | 7.5 g | 8.33 g | €860.67 |
| 5 pesos | 3.75 g | 4.17 g | €430.33 |
| 2½ pesos | 1.875 g | 2.08 g | €215.17 |
| 2 pesos | 1.5 g | 1.67 g | €172.13 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Every size has a round fine weight: 7.5, 3.75, 1.875 and 1.5 grams of gold.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Hidalgo and the eagle
The 10, 5 and 2½ pesos carry the portrait of Miguel Hidalgo, the priest who began the uprising against Spain in 1810. The 2 pesos is too small for a portrait and shows only the value in a wreath, with the eagle on the other side.
Like the 20 pesos, these coins were later restruck with a fixed date; the 2 pesos dated 1945 is a common sight.
Small, but still checked
The smaller the coin, the larger the share of handling in the price. We sort them by size, weigh them and check the fineness. A bag of these little coins from an estate is dealt with quickly.

Questions about selling Mexican gold pesos (2 to 10 pesos)
How much gold is in a Mexican 2 pesos?
1.5 grams of fine gold, in a coin of 1.6667 grams. It is one of the smallest gold coins we buy, and we settle it against the gold rate of the moment.
Is the 10 pesos on this page or with the 20 pesos?
On this page. The 20 pesos with the Aztec calendar and the 50 pesos Centenario each have their own page.
Are restrikes worth less?
Not in gold. Restrikes have the same weight and fineness as the originals; only with scarce original dates can collector value play a part.
Can I have a whole bag of coins valued at once?
Yes. We sort them by size, weigh and check them, and you see what each size fetches before you decide.
