What do we pay for a gold 20 drachmai?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 drachmai | 5.807 g | 6.45 g | €666.33 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Only two years, 1876 and 1884, both with King George I and both struck in Paris.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Two years, two portraits
Greece joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1868 and struck little gold after that. The 20 drachmai of 1876 and 1884 are both one-year types with George I, each with a different portrait. The reverse shows the Greek arms beneath a crown.
More than the gold
In gold a 20 drachmai equals a Napoleon: 5.8065 grams. Because of the small mintages its value to collectors is often higher. We value both and discuss with you what fetches the most.

Questions about selling gold 20 drachmai
How much gold is in a 20 drachmai?
5.8065 grams of fine gold in a coin of 6.4516 grams. That is the gold value; with this coin the collector value may be higher.
Why is this coin rare?
Only two years were struck, in limited numbers. That makes the coin much less common than other 20-franc-sized coins.
Should I have the coin cleaned before selling?
No, certainly not. With a rare coin, polishing can lower the collector value considerably. Bring it as it is.
Can you assess the collector value as well?
Yes. We look at date, condition and authenticity, and tell you honestly what the gold is worth and what a collector might offer for it.
