What do we pay for a gold 20 leva?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 leva | 5.807 g | 6.45 g | €666.33 |
| 100 leva | 29.032 g | 32.26 g | €3,331.63 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Prince Ferdinand had his first gold coins struck in Kremnica in 1894; the KB mint mark is on the coin.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A Viennese engraver for Sofia
For his first gold coins Ferdinand I had the dies made by Anton Scharff, a medallist in Vienna. The coins themselves were struck in Kremnica. The 20 leva shows the prince’s bust and the Bulgarian arms; the 100 leva is five times as heavy.
Gold and rarity
We settle on the fine gold: 5.8065 grams per 20 leva, 29.03 grams per 100 leva. Because only 100,000 of the 20 leva were struck and the 100 leva is far rarer, we also look at every coin as a collector’s piece.
How to sell your gold 20 leva
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling gold 20 leva
How much gold is in a 20 leva?
5.8065 grams of fine gold in a coin of 6.4516 grams. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.
Is a 20 leva of 1894 rare?
100,000 were struck, far fewer than of a Napoleon or a Vreneli. We therefore value both the gold and the collector value and tell you which is higher.
What does KB on the coin mean?
It is the mint mark of Kremnica, where the coin was struck. It has nothing to do with the gold content.
Do you buy the 100 leva too?
Yes. This large coin contains 29.03 grams of fine gold. We check it with extra care, because large gold coins are copied more often.
