Why does the Libertad have no face value?
Mexico chose to strike it as pure bullion, with the weight in gold stated on the coin instead of a denomination. That has no effect on what it is worth to you: we settle on the fine weight against the gold rate, exactly as with any other coin.
Are Libertads rarer than other bullion coins?
Mintages are markedly lower than for the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf, and gold Libertads in particular were struck in small numbers in several years. That can lift certain issues above the gold value, and we check the year during the valuation.
Which sizes do you buy?
We buy the one ounce and the half ounce. Both are 999 fine, and each has its own fine weight and its own purchase price in the table above, worked out against the gold rate showing while you are at our counter.
Is the Libertad the same as the Mexican 50 pesos?
No, they are two different coins. The 50 pesos, the Centenario, is a historic coin from 1921 at 900 fine and considerably heavier. The Libertad is a modern bullion coin at 999. We buy both, and each has its own page and its own price.
