What do we pay for a gold rand (1 and 2 rand)?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 rand | 7.322 g | 7.99 g | €840.29 |
| 1 rand | 3.661 g | 3.99 g | €420.14 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Jan van Riebeeck on the obverse, a springbok on the reverse – the springbok that later appeared on the Krugerrand too.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

From pound to rand
In 1961 the rand replaced the South African pound. The gold 2 rand was given the weight of the old pound and therefore of the Sovereign; the 1 rand half that. The obverse shows Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of Cape Town, the reverse a springbok.
Small size, ordinary gold
For our purchase the fine gold counts: 7.32 grams in the 2 rand, 3.66 grams in the 1 rand. Proof sets in their original packaging we assess separately. Single coins we weigh and measure, and we determine the fineness without damage.

Questions about selling gold rand (1 and 2 rand)
How much gold is in a gold 2 rand?
7.322 grams of fine gold, as much as in a Sovereign. We settle against the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.
Is a gold rand a Krugerrand?
No. The Krugerrand contains a full troy ounce of gold and is an investment coin of 1967. The gold 1 and 2 rand are smaller and were meant as currency.
Do you buy proof sets?
Yes. If the coins are still in their original packaging, please leave them there. We value the gold and look at whether the set as a whole is worth more.
When do I get my money?
Straight after you agree: in cash at the counter or by bank within 24 hours.
