What do we pay for a Gold Vreneli?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 francs | 5.806 g | 6.45 g | €656.43 |
| 10 francs | 2.903 g | 3.23 g | €328.21 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
The Swiss twenty-franc piece, with the girl’s head. The same size as the French and Belgian twenty-franc pieces – the Latin Monetary Union. It turns up in old Dutch and Belgian money boxes remarkably often.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Questions about selling Gold Vreneli
Why is the coin called Vreneli?
After the young woman on the obverse, an idealised Swiss figure whom the public nicknamed Vreneli, a diminutive of Verena. The name has stuck ever since, and in the trade it now refers to the whole Swiss twenty-franc gold series.
How much gold does a Vreneli contain?
The twenty-franc piece weighs 6.4516 grams at 900 fine, leaving 5.80645 grams of pure gold. The ten-franc piece holds exactly half that, 2.90323 grams. Both have their own line in the price table on this page.
Is a Vreneli the same as a French 20 francs?
In weight and fineness, yes: both were struck to the Latin Monetary Union standard and hold 5.80645 grams of fine gold. The designs differ, and so the two are separate coins to collectors, but the gold value is identical.
Are certain Vreneli years worth more?
A handful are. Most years were struck in large numbers and are traded purely on their gold content, but a few scarce dates command a premium among collectors. We check the year during the valuation and pay whichever value is higher.
