What do we pay for a gold 5000 francs Belgium?
Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine gold | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 francs | 15.552 g | 15.55 g | €1,821.83 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 999‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
From the last years of the Belgian franc: Brussels 2000 with Albert and Isabella (1999) and the Belgian EU presidency (2001).
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

The last gold in francs
Just before the euro Belgium issued gold coins of 5000 francs. In 1999 one appeared for Brussels as European Capital of Culture in 2000, with the Archdukes Albert and Isabella; in 2001 one for the Belgian presidency of the European Union. Both weigh 15.55 grams of pure gold.
Half an ounce of gold
At 15.55 grams each coin contains half a troy ounce of gold. We pay on that weight against the gold rate of the moment. The face value of 5000 francs no longer plays any part: the franc was replaced by the euro in 2002.
