This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Only 10,000 coins, for the 150th birthday of the Icelandic independence leader Jón Sigurðsson.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Four guardian spirits and an independence leader

The obverse shows the Icelandic arms with the four landvættir, the guardian spirits of the island: the bull, the eagle, the dragon and the giant. The reverse shows Jón Sigurðsson, who led the movement for Icelandic self-government in the nineteenth century.

Gold and rarity

The coin weighs almost exactly as much as a Scandinavian 20 kroner and contains 8.06 grams of fine gold. With a mintage of 10,000 it is rare; we therefore value the gold and the collector value, and tell you which is higher.

In four steps

How to sell your icelandic gold 500 krónur 1961

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling icelandic gold 500 krónur 1961

How much gold is in the Icelandic 500 krónur?

8.064 grams of fine gold in a coin of 8.96 grams. That is the gold value; because of the small mintage the collector value may be higher.

Is this a Scandinavian krone?

No, but its weight is almost the same as that of the Scandinavian 20 kroner. It is an Icelandic commemorative coin from a single year.

Should I have the coin cleaned?

No. With a rare coin, polishing can lower the collector value. Bring it as it is.

What should I bring?

The coin and valid identification. The valuation is free and without obligation.
