Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Many coins are restrikes from 1961 and 1962, made with the old dies; the stars beside the date show the year of the restrike.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Restrikes from the old dies

In 1961 and 1962 the Spanish mint in Madrid struck gold pesetas again using the original dies of Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII. These restrikes carry the original date, with the digits of the year they were actually struck, such as 61 or 62, in the stars beside it.

For the gold that makes no difference: weight and fineness are the same.

What we settle

A 25 pesetas contains 7.2581 grams of fine gold, a 20 pesetas 5.8065 grams and the 100 pesetas 29.03 grams. We weigh and measure every coin, and with an original early year we look at whether collector value plays a part.

In four steps

How to sell your spanish gold pesetas

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling spanish gold pesetas

How much gold is in a 25 pesetas?

7.2581 grams of fine gold in a coin of 8.0645 grams. We settle against the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.

What do the digits in the stars mean?

They show the year in which the coin was actually struck. On a 1962 restrike, for example, the stars read 62, while the date on the coin is much older.

Is a restrike worth less?

Not in gold, because weight and fineness are the same. A nineteenth-century original may be worth more to a collector; we look at that coin by coin.

Do you buy the 100 pesetas?

Yes. This coin of 1897 contains 29.03 grams of fine gold. We check it with extra care, because large gold coins are copied more often.
