How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

What is the difference between tam, yarım and çeyrek?
They are the whole, half and quarter lira. A tam holds 6.6146 grams of fine gold, a yarım 3.3073 grams and a çeyrek 1.65365 grams. The quarter is by far the most common, because it is the usual size for a gift.
What is the difference between Cumhuriyet and Ata lira?
Both are 916.7 fine and hold the same gold for a given size; the difference is the design, with the Ata carrying the portrait of Atatürk. For the gold value they are equivalent, and we buy both at the same price per gram.
My coin is mounted in a pendant, can I still sell it?
Yes. Gift lira are often set in a mount or hung on a chain. We weigh the coin and the mount separately, because the mount is usually a different fineness, and you see both amounts in the offer so you can decide per part.
Are these coins worth more than their gold?
Usually not. Turkish lira are struck in very large numbers and trade on their gold content, which at 916.7 fine is straightforward to calculate. Older Ottoman gold coins are a different matter, and those we assess for collector’s value as well.
