What do we pay for a Gold American Buffalo?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 oz31.104 g€3,516.29

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Gold American Buffalo

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold American Buffalo

Why does the Buffalo come in one size only?

The United States Mint struck fractional Buffalos in a single year, 2008, and never again. In practice, therefore, almost every Buffalo that reaches our counter is the one-ounce version, and that is the size the table on this page is built around.

Is a Buffalo worth more than an American Eagle?

For the gold value, no: both hold exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, so both fetch the same with us. The Buffalo is 999.9 pure while the Eagle is alloyed to 916.7, which changes the total weight but not the gold inside.

The coin looks dull, is that a problem?

Not at all. Pure gold at 999.9 is soft and picks up a matt look and fine handling marks easily. None of that touches the fine weight, and we settle on the gold. Please do not polish it in an attempt to improve matters.

Do you buy the 2008 fractional Buffalos?

Yes, and with those we look carefully at the collector’s value as well. The half, quarter and tenth ounce Buffalos were struck in one year only and in small numbers, so they can sit above the gold value. You receive the higher of the two amounts.
