What do we pay for gold?
We settle gold per carat, from 8 to 24. The table on this page shows what one gram of each carat yields at the rate of this moment; the higher the carat, the larger the share of pure gold and the higher the amount per gram.
The rate underneath is the same for every carat. What differs is only how much of your gram is actually gold: 750 leaves three quarters, 585 a little over half, 333 exactly a third.
How do you read the carat of your gold?
Carat indicates how many of the 24 parts are pure gold. 24 carat is therefore pure gold, and 18 carat consists for 18/24 – or 75% – of gold. In the piece itself the figure in thousandths is usually stamped: 750 for 18 carat, 585 for 14 carat.
With old gold that stamp is often worn away or absent altogether. We then establish the fineness with an acid test or an X-ray analysis – non-destructive, so your piece stays intact.
What you see here is the pure material value. Rate times fineness times weight, with nothing deducted. We calculate with the world market rate of this moment, converted at the euro rate of that same moment, and refresh every minute.
What moves the gold rate
Gold is quoted worldwide in dollars per troy ounce, a unit of weight of 31.1035 grams that is used for precious metal only. For the price in euros per gram, two things therefore come into play: the quotation itself and the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. A rising dollar can push the euro price up while the dollar quotation stands still.
On the demand side sit central banks, investors and the jewellery industry. Because gold itself pays no interest, it becomes relatively less attractive when interest rates rise, and more attractive when investors expect unrest. That explains why the rate often moves on news that appears to have nothing to do with gold.
Of the four precious metals, gold generally moves the most calmly. Swings of several per cent in a single day are exceptional; with silver and palladium that is far more common.

Questions about the gold price
How often is the gold price on this page updated?
Every minute. We fetch the spot rate for gold and the euro exchange rate from the world market and pass them straight through to every carat in the table. The time of the last update is shown beside the chart, so you can always see how fresh the figure is.
Why is your purchase price lower than the spot price?
Between your jewellery and a tradeable bar sit melting, refining and assaying, and those costs sit in our margin. We show that margin openly, per fineness, so that you can see what happens between the spot price and the purchase price. The spot price itself applies only to pure, certified metal on the world market.
What is the difference between carat and alloy?
Carat is the measure for gold: 24 carat is pure gold, 14 carat is 58.5% gold. Silver, platinum and palladium are expressed in thousandths instead – 925 for sterling silver, for example. Both say the same thing: which part of the weight is precious metal and which part is not.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
