Why is the Panda measured in grams and not ounces?
China switched the series to metric sizes in 2016, so the largest coin holds 30 grams of fine gold instead of a troy ounce of 31.1035 grams. That makes it slightly lighter than an ounce coin, and the price table above reflects that difference.
Does the yearly design change affect the value?
It can. The panda motif changes almost every year and certain issues have small mintages, which gives them a collector’s following above the gold value. We look at the year and the mintage and offer you whichever of the two values is higher.
My Panda is still sealed in plastic, should I open it?
No, leave it sealed. Chinese Pandas were issued in factory-sealed plastic, and an intact seal supports the collector’s value considerably. We can establish weight and dimensions without breaking it, and we would ask you first if opening were ever necessary.
Are older Panda coins a different fineness?
Older issues were struck at 999 rather than the 999.9 seen on some other bullion coins, and that is the fineness we work with here. The difference is small, and we settle on the fine weight, so it is already accounted for in the table.
