This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 916.7‰ (22 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Why the Krugerrand earns a sharp price
With a piece of jewellery we have to melt, separate and assay. With a Krugerrand we do not: weight and fineness are fixed and the coin is directly tradeable worldwide. Our margin can therefore be lower, and you see that back in the price.
Mind the difference between total weight and fine gold. The whole coin weighs 33.93 grams but contains exactly 31.103 grams of pure gold. That last figure is what we settle on; the copper in the alloy does not count.
Why copper? Pure gold is too soft for a coin meant to stay in circulation. The copper alloy makes the Krugerrand hard enough to handle and gives it its characteristic reddish colour.
Which years do we buy?
Every year from 1967 onwards. With the Krugerrand the year rarely counts towards the price: it is an investment coin, not a collector’s coin. The exception is proof issues with a mirror finish and the original box – those we look at separately.

What we check
The Krugerrand is one of the most counterfeited coins in the world. We therefore always check the weight on a calibrated scale, the diameter and thickness with callipers, and measure the fineness by X-ray analysis. If one of those three does not add up, we see it immediately.
That check is non-destructive and happens while you watch. We also explain what we are measuring and why.

If you are selling several coins at once, let us know in advance. We then make sure enough liquidity is ready and can fix the rate for an agreed period on request – so you are not dependent on the moment you happen to walk in.

How much is a Krugerrand worth today?
A whole coin contains 31.103 grams of fine gold. Multiply that by today’s gold rate and subtract our margin – the exact amount per size stands in the table on this page and moves with the rate throughout the day.
Why does the coin weigh 33.93 grams and not 31.1?
Because there is copper in the alloy to make the coin hard enough to stay in circulation. The gold content is exactly one troy ounce; the copper carries no value of its own and does not count towards the price we pay you.
Does the year of issue matter?
With the ordinary version hardly at all, because this is an investment coin rather than a collector’s coin. Only proof issues with their original box and certificate can come out above the pure gold value, and those we assess separately.
Should I clean the coin first?
No, and please do not. Polishing can cause scratches and gains you nothing: we settle on the gold, not on the shine. With proof issues and older coins, cleaning can even push the value down noticeably.
How do you recognise a counterfeit?
By weight, diameter, thickness and X-ray analysis. Tungsten has almost the same density as gold, but the combination of all four measurements always gives a fake away. The whole check is non-destructive and happens while you watch.
Can I sell a half or quarter Krugerrand as well?
Certainly. We buy every size: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. The price per coin follows the fine weight of that particular size, so a half ounce yields half of what a full ounce does.
