What do we pay for a gold 1000 schilling Babenberg?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Known in Austria as the „goldene Tausender”: 1.8 million coins, and so still a common sight at gold dealers.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A thousand years of the Babenbergs

In 976 the Babenbergs were granted the Eastern March, the beginning of what would become Austria. A thousand years later the Republic issued this coin. The obverse shows the equestrian seal of Duke Frederick II with the inscription 976–1976 Einsetzung der Babenberger, the reverse the federal eagle.

Why it turns up so often

With 1.8 million coins struck, the 1000 schilling is no rarity. It is therefore traded mainly on its gold: 12.15 grams of fine gold. We weigh, measure and check the fineness and then settle at the rate of the day.

In four steps

How to sell your gold 1000 schilling Babenberg

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold 1000 schilling Babenberg

How much gold is in a 1000 schilling?

12.15 grams of fine gold in a coin of 13.5 grams. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.

Is this coin a collector’s piece?

Hardly; too many were struck. It is traded mainly as gold, and that is how we value it.

Are there other gold 1000 schilling coins?

Yes, Austria later issued more gold commemorative coins of 1000 schilling, with other weights. This page is about the Babenberg of 1976; other coins we simply weigh and check at the counter.

May the coin be damaged?

Yes. A scratch or a dent changes nothing about the gold, and that is what we settle on. No polishing needed.
