What do we pay for a gold 100 francs?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 900‰ (21.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The big brothers of the Napoleon: a 100 francs contains five times as much gold as a 20 francs.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Five Napoleons in one coin

Under Napoleon III, coins of 100 and 50 francs appeared from 1855, first with the bare head and later with the laurel wreath. The Third Republic then struck the 100 francs with the Génie, the winged figure writing a constitution.

The weight follows the franc: a 100 francs is five times a 20 francs, with 29.03 grams of fine gold.

Big coin, thorough check

With a coin holding almost an ounce of gold, counterfeiting pays, and it exists. We weigh on a calibrated scale, measure diameter and thickness and determine the fineness without damaging the coin. Only when everything adds up do we settle on the fine gold.

In four steps

How to sell your gold 100 francs

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold 100 francs

How much gold is in a French 100 francs?

29.0323 grams of fine gold in a coin of 32.2581 grams. That is five times the gold of a 20 francs. We settle against the gold rate of the moment.

Is a Génie worth more than a Napoleon III?

In gold they are equal. Which fetches more depends on year and condition; some years have collector value. We judge that coin by coin.

Do you buy the 50 francs too?

Yes. The 50 francs contains 14.516 grams of fine gold and has its own line in the table.

Are there counterfeits of the 100 francs?

Yes, as with every large gold coin. That is why we always check weight, dimensions and fineness, while you watch.
