What do we pay for palladium?
We settle palladium per alloy, from 500 to 999. The table on this page shows what one gram of each fineness yields at the rate of this moment; the higher the fineness, the larger the share of pure palladium and the higher the amount per gram.
The rate underneath is the same for every fineness. What differs is only how much of your gram is actually palladium: 999 leaves virtually everything, 950 nineteen twentieths, 500 exactly half.
How do you read the alloy of your palladium?
Palladium knows no carat. The fineness is expressed in thousandths: a stamp 950 means 950 parts pure palladium per 1000 parts of alloy. The rest consists of other metals that make the alloy workable.
If there is no stamp in it, we establish the fineness with an analysis. That happens in your presence, at the table, before any amount is worked out.
What you see here is the pure material value. Rate times fineness times weight, with nothing deducted. We calculate with the world market rate of this moment, converted at the euro rate of that same moment, and refresh every minute.
What moves the palladium rate
Palladium is the most industrial of the four metals: the overwhelming majority of it goes into catalytic converters in petrol cars. Jewellery and investment products form only a small part of demand.
As a result the damping effect that gold does have is missing here. With gold, investors stand ready to buy when the price falls; with palladium that counterforce is far smaller, and so the swings turn out larger.
Supply moreover comes from few countries, with Russia and South Africa as the largest suppliers. News about production, exports or emissions regulation therefore works through into the rate almost immediately.

How often is the palladium price on this page updated?
Every minute. We fetch the spot rate for palladium and the euro exchange rate from the world market and pass them straight through to every alloy in the table. The time of the last update is shown beside the chart, so you can always see how fresh the figure is.
Why does the palladium rate move so sharply?
Because palladium is the most industrial of the four precious metals: most of it goes into catalytic converters, and investors form only a small part of demand. The damping effect that gold enjoys is therefore missing, and supply comes from few countries, so news travels straight into the rate.
Can you fix the rate for a larger consignment?
