What do we pay for a gold Queen’s Beasts?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 oz31.104 g—€3,718.03
1/4 oz7.776 g—€929.51

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Ten heraldic beasts, from the Lion of England in 2016 to the White Greyhound of Richmond, followed by a Completer coin showing all ten together.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Ten beasts, one weight

The series opened in 2016 with the Lion of England and went on to include the Griffin of Edward III, the Red Dragon of Wales and the Unicorn of Scotland, among others. Every beast is a different design, but the gold never changes: a troy ounce or a quarter of one, with no copper or silver added.

So the beast makes no difference to the price we pay. A Falcon weighs exactly as much as a Yale, and we settle both on their fine gold at the rate of the day.

What we look at

Pure gold is soft. Small scratches and spots are normal on this coin and cost you nothing. We weigh it, measure diameter and thickness and check the fineness without damaging the coin. If it is still in its original capsule, please leave it there.

In four steps

How to sell your gold Queen’s Beasts

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold Queen’s Beasts

Does it matter which beast is on my coin?

Not for the gold value. All ten beasts are struck at the same weight and fineness, so a 1 oz Griffin and a 1 oz Unicorn fetch the same. Only proof issues with box and certificate are assessed separately.

How much gold is in a 1 oz Queen’s Beasts?

Exactly one troy ounce, 31.1035 grams, in 999.9 gold. With no alloy in it, the total weight and the fine weight are practically the same, and we settle on that against the gold rate of the moment.

What is the Completer coin?

A closing coin from 2021 showing all ten heraldic beasts together. It carries the same gold weight as the rest of the series and we value it in the same way.

Can I sell a whole series at once?

Yes. Let us know in advance about a complete set or a larger lot, so enough money is ready. Every coin is weighed and checked individually, and you see the calculation before you decide.
