How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.
This coin is 986‰ (23.6 carat) pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

How pure is an Austrian ducat?
It is 986 fine, higher than almost any other historic circulating coin and well above the 900 of the corona series. A single ducat of 3.4909 grams therefore holds 3.442 grams of pure gold, so very little of the weight is alloy.
What is a four-ducat piece?
It is the large version of the same coin, containing 13.7681 grams of fine gold against 3.442 grams for the single. It is thin and wide, which makes it easy to recognise, and it has its own line in the price table above.
Why are so many dated 1915?
Austria restruck both the single and the four-ducat piece for many years using dies dated 1915, so that date dominates the surviving stock. Restrikes are valued on their gold content; genuine earlier issues we also assess for collector’s value.
Do you buy ducats that are bent or damaged?
Yes. The four-ducat piece in particular is thin and bends easily, but for the gold value only weight and fineness count and neither changes when a coin is misshapen. A collector’s premium would be lost, so we tell you which value applies.
