Sell a Gold Kangaroo

Australia, from 1986. The Perth Mint changes the kangaroo on the reverse every year, which gives older issues a following of their own.

What do we pay for a Gold Kangaroo (Nugget)?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €113.05 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Gold Kangaroo (Nugget)

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Gold Kangaroo (Nugget)

Why is this coin also called the Nugget?

The first issues, from 1986 onwards, showed famous Australian gold nuggets on the reverse. The Perth Mint switched to the kangaroo in 1989, but the old name stuck in the trade and both terms still refer to the same series.

Does the changing design make older years more valuable?

Sometimes. Because the reverse changes annually and some years were struck in modest numbers, certain issues carry a collector’s premium above the gold value. We assess both the gold and the collector’s side and pay you the higher of the two.

Should the coin stay in its capsule?

Yes, please leave it sealed if it still is. Kangaroos were issued in hard plastic capsules, and an untouched capsule protects the surface and supports any collector’s value. We can weigh and measure without opening it in most cases.

Which sizes do you buy?

We buy the one ounce, the half ounce and the tenth ounce. Each size carries its own fine weight, so each has its own purchase price in the table above, worked out against the gold rate of that moment.
