What do we pay for a gold First Spouse?

Based on the gold rate of this moment, €119.54 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure gold it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ (24 carat) pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Four portraits a year: the wives of the American presidents, starting with Martha Washington in 2007.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

One portrait per presidency

The first four coins appeared in 2007: Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison and – because Thomas Jefferson was a widower – a coin showing Liberty. The series followed the presidents in order, with four designs a year.

Half an ounce of pure gold

Unlike the old American gold coins, the First Spouse is not 900 but 999.9 fine. Every coin contains 15.55 grams of fine gold, whatever the portrait. We settle on that gold at the rate of the day.

The coins were sold as proof and uncirculated issues, usually in a box with certificate. Feel free to bring it; for the gold value it is not needed.

In four steps

How to sell your gold First Spouse

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling gold First Spouse

How much gold is in a First Spouse?

Half a troy ounce, 15.55 grams of 999.9 gold. We multiply that weight by the gold rate of the moment, less our margin.

Does one portrait fetch more than another?

Not for the gold: every coin contains the same half ounce. Some portraits sold in small numbers and are sought after by collectors; we assess that separately.

Why does one coin show Liberty instead of a first lady?

For presidents without a spouse during their term, such as Thomas Jefferson, the Mint chose an image of Liberty. Those coins are simply part of the series.

Can I sell a whole series in the original boxes?

Yes. Let us know in advance about a larger collection, so enough money is ready. Every coin is weighed and checked, and you see the calculation before you decide.
